Backpacking in Bali
By James Keightley
If you are avid backpackers then Bali is for you as this has long since been one of the most popular places to go backpacking and the north of the island is taking over from Kuta, which is an old backpacker’s destination that is now commercialized. Air Panas is also another great part of the north of the island where you can stay right in the shadows of Mount Batur and there are many places to find accommodation under your own steam. Getting around on a budget is never a problem in Bali and transport is cheap and the popular bemo minibus is still available for tourists to hop on and get around with ease. The golden rule of backpacking is to hangout where other backpackers are as there is no better way to find all the cheapest and best places to stay and visit by picking the brains of other travellers. Temple festivals are a free and fun way to really immerse yourself in the culture and history of the island and there are lost of these such festivals all over bali, just ask around and they are sure to point you in the direction of the closest. These are full of tradition and colour and you will not be disappointed. However, you will need to remember that you will have to adhere to custom by ensuring you turn up wearing a sarong. |
