Chronic Pumonary Obstructive Disease
By Jane Keightley
COPD or Chronic Pulmonary Disease is a wide term used for people who suffer from chronic bronchitis, emphysema or both. COPD is a slow progressive disorder which can not be cured. It is diagnosed by airflow obstruction that does not improve over a period of several months. The main cause of this disease is smoking. Smoking causes damage to the lining of the airways causing them to become inflamed. Similar damage can also be caused by air pollution and polluted working conditions; however people who have never smoked rarely develop COPD. A cough is usually the first symptom to develop. It is often productive with phlegm. It gradually becomes more persistent and many people refer to it as a smokers cough. The next symptom is breathlessness and wheezing, which at first may only occur during activities such as climbing stair but gradually becomes worse eventually developing into difficulty in breathing if the person continues to smoke. The damage to the airways tends to make the person develop more mucus than normal, this forms phlegm and the person will cough up a lot of sputum each day. They become prone to chest infections which will exacerbate these symptoms and cause the sputum to turn yellow or green. These symptoms typically begin in people over 40 who have smoked for 20 years or more and if the person continues to smoke they will gradually develop and worsen over the following years until it becomes severe to the point where insufficient oxygen is getting to the lungs and consequently into the blood stream which can cause the heart to fail. There is no cure for COPD only treatment to try and relieve symptoms. It is a progressive condition which as the patient worsens they will gradually receive more medication such as steroid inhalers and eventually oxygen to try and relieve symptoms.

A member of my family developed COPD through smoking, and eventually gave up because of breathing diffuculties. Now, 2 years on, she swears she felt bettern when she was smoking! I say it is a case of selective memory.
It is so embarrassing to answer, how I got it, COPD. Yes I got it from smoking. So I did it to myself. Yes I did it to myself and I thank those who posted the article to make others aware of the variety of diseases waiting for the smoker if you get around cancer there are other ailments waiting for the unsuspecting. So educate yourself and maybe save another. Arthur http://adpowermarketingaffiliate.ahdjr.com/
