Visiting Greenwich Village New York
By Jane Keightley
Greenwich Village is home of the Empire State Building and a great place from which to catch an early morning view of the buzzing metropolis. Here are some tips based on my own visit of New York about how best to experience Greenwich Village. The Empire State Building is a great way to start your day with an early morning visit to the top for a fantastic vista of the city just as it starts to wake up. It is sure to take your breath away and if you are not fully awake then you will by the time you get to the top of it. This fabulous art deco building was completed in 1930, robbing the Chrysler Building of its record title of being the tallest building and having only held it for a year. The building has a 16 storey observation tower on top of it and the top mast was initially intended to be a mooring mast for airships, but this was soon abandoned. From here head to the Morgan Library on 36th Street which houses a fantastic collection of books and manuscripts collected by financier Pierpont Morgan and are displayed in this renaissance library. The collection is displayed on a magnificent three tiered shelf adorned with murals and mosaics. Head along Madison Avenue to Madison Square Park to spend some time here and then head on to Gramercy Park off of 23rd Street, which is a beautiful park styled on the residential squares of London. Next you may want to hail a cab and head on over to 10th Street and take a look at East Village, which is a great place to stroll, shop and take in the surroundings. This is an eccentric and multicoloured village with people bustling around adorned in tattoos. You could quite easily spend the afternoon chilling out here and casually taking all the landmarks it has to offer such as Grace Church, Colonnade Row, the Bowery and much more. If you enjoyed East Village, then you are going to love Greenwich Village, which you will find by heading for 6th Avenue and then carmine Street. Instantly, you will feel that you have stepped back in to the 19th Century in this small bohemian time capsule. This was once the area of high society, Greenwich Village has also been a frequent haunt of Jimmy Hendrix and Bob Dylan. Be sure to check out Christopher Street where a riot was the start of the gay liberation movement. Greenwich Village is an excellent way to finish off the day before heading back to your hotel to relax you feet.
