Visiting Lower Manhattan New York
By Jane Keightley
I have enjoyed many visits to New York and love to take in all of the facts and sights of this city, and one of the greatest parts that I always enjoy is Lower Manhattan, which is the home to the Statute of Liberty. There is so much to see and sometimes it is best to structure your day and pick just a handful of places to visit. These are my recommendations for how best to see Lower Manhattan in a day. There is no other way to kick start the day than to head straight to ferry in order to beat the rush and get your tickets over to Ellis and the Statute of Liberty. Ellis Island, home of the Statute of Liberty is also home of where millions of immigrants to American would have first arrived and it is a truly captivating visit. I was entranced through out the entire tour and fascinated by its history from between 1892 and 1954. The Statute of Liberty would have been one of the many things that immigrants first saw. This copper statute towers over 300 feet and you have to climb 354 steps to the top. It was a gift to American from France and intended to be symbolic of an America that was perceived by Europe to provide opportunity and equality for everyone. This will take up most of the morning and at the end of this you may want to catch the ferry back to Lower Manhattan and head straight for the Seaport district for a bite to eat and some shopping. This is a restored port that was one of New York’s busiest and now houses quirky shops and galleries and plenty of restraints to sit outside and watch the world go by. After a light lunch it is nice to head over and finish the afternoon in Soho. Previously an old haunt for brothels, Soho later developed in to an area of light industry, which later went in to decline after World War 2 and eventually became a centre for artists. One thing that I did not realise was that SoHo stood for South of Houston. I just thought that it was a standard meaningless name used worldwide. By the end of SoHo you will no doubt be ready to chill out and recharge for the night life.
