Visiting Midtown Manhattan New York

By Jane Keightley

The home of Central Park and Times Square, Midtown Manhattan starts at 42nd Street and runs all the way up to 59th Street and there is a lot you can pull in during a day.

Here is how I spent my first day in New York exploring Midtown Manhattan. Start the day by making your way down to the Grand Central Station and sit back at one of the many bars and grab a coffee as you watch the daily commuters running around like little ants. It was constructed in 1902 and completed in 1913, a year after the Titanic sunk, and it is about 40,000 square feet in size. It is an impressive building with natural light streaming in through the high arched windows and decorated with impressive murals of great constellations on the ceilings.

Grand Central Station oddly has a feel of something other than a train station and one of somewhere that you might expect to do business. This is probably explained by the fact that the architect believed that train stations should possess the elements of an old bazaar.

Having seen the delights of Grand Central Station you can head over to the Chrysler Building on Lexington Avenue. Built in the late 1920’s by the American car maker, Walter Chrysler, it briefly held the record for the tallest building. Notice the magnificently decorated roof of the building that is decorated with automobile parts such as bonnets and hub caps.

From the Chrysler Building head over to 5th Avenue and checkout St Patrick’s Cathedral, this impressive example of gothic aesthetics sits nestled amongst its contemporary backdrop of high rise skyscrapers. Constructed between 1858 and 1888 the spires stretch 330 feet high.

From here you can head on over to Central Park via 7th Avenue where you can get a bite to eat at the famous Carneige deli just past Carneige Hall at 57th Street.

After lunch head on to the Museum of Modern Art on 53rd Street, which exhibited its first collection in 1929 and that happened to be some of the work by Vincent Van Gogh

Having explored the delights of the museum of modern art take a gentle stroll down to Times Square, which claims to be the ‘crossroads of the World’, and is a triangle formed by the intersection of 42nd Street and 7th Avenue. It is home to about 35 theatres and attracts more than 500,000 visitors to celebrate New Years Eve.

From 42nd Street walk down to New York’s public library that is easily identifiable by the two marble lions that guard its entrance. Take a look at the thirds floor where there are some magnificent murals by Edward Lansing that depicts the history of the printed word. You will also be equally impressed by the Rose Reading Room that stretches about two blocks long.

This will take you to the end of the day and in time to crash out and relax before going out again to experience the delights of Midtown Manhattan by night.
